What is a Farmers' Market?        More about Brough

The Farmers' Market is held on the third Saturday of every month, in the Memorial Hall in Brough (Brough-under-Stainmore  to give its full name), Cumbria.

It is almost unique among farmers' markets in that it is entirely under cover and thus protected from the weather, though there may be extra stalls outside, and our vegetable seller actually prefers to be outside.

The Farmers' Market is a Certified member of the FARMA (the National Farmers' Retail & Markets Association). It has been in operation for ten years now, and was helped in its early (first five) years with support from Cumbria Community Foundation, North Pennines LEADER+ and DEFRA, the Co-operative Group Community Dividend Fund, Cumbria County Council, Cumbria Rural Enterprise Agency, Eden District Council and Brough Parish Council.

Future dates are:--

2013    May 18th   June 15th   July 20th   August 17th   September 21st   October 19th   November 16th   December 21st

The current opening hours are 9.30 am to 2.00 pm for the larger part of the year, but in winter (January, February and March) the closing time used to be 1.00 pm (an hour earlier) but this year, the organisers reserve the right to close the market earlier (but never before noon) if the number of customers does not justify extending the closing time. Some other markets do not open for the first two months of the year!.

If you cannot manage these dates, or if you like what you find in Brough and would like an opportunity to restock before our next market, you might also like to visit the Eden Valley's other Farmers' Markets at Orton (2nd Saturday in the month) or Penrith (3rd Tuesday) and in summer months (April to September) at Pooley Bridge (last Sunday in month).  Information on farmers' markets elsewhere in the United Kingdom can be found on the Localfoods web pages.

Brough has a long history, which includes the castle which dominates the village and is open without charge to visitors.
